Newsom is Bad News for California
Gavin Newsom, mayor of San Francisco, is running for California, but we Californians do not want politicians like Newsom in power. Newsom is bad news for California, and especially for California dog owners.
While Mayor of San Francisco, Newsom pushed for a change to state law that would have likely forced many dog owners to give up their pets. His administration advocated 'selective' enforcement of leash laws (like profiling—wherein laws are enforced only with respect to a certain group of people). His administration also looked to Denver, Colorado as a best practice for dealing with dog attacks. Denver has banned any dog that looks like a Pit Bull, resulting in the death of many dogs. In fact, thanks to Denver's law, a disabled child who had a service dog that looked at least part Pit Bull had that dog confiscated and killed.
But Newsom didn't want to just stop at Pit Bulls. His task force report cited an intent to expand that law to cover many other breeds.
Read what Denver has done to family dogs and see the graphic stacks of dead puppies and adult dogs caused by Denver's ridiculous law.
Beyond his anti-dog policies, Newsom has shown a disregard for public safety. After Diane Whipple was killed by two Presa Canarios owned by a grossly irresponsible couple, Newsom did nothing to deal directly with the issue of irresponsible dog owners. It was only after a Pit Bull owned by a woman who locked her son up in a basement and left an intact male dog and a female dog in heat upstairs (hoping they'd breed) that he got the idea to go after all Pit Bulls—not Presa Canarios.
And who can forget the San Francisco zoo incident where a tiger escaped its enclosure? San Francisco sure seems to have had its share of animal-related problems, and Mayor Gavin Newsom has been at the center of those problems. He's bad news for animal lovers all across the United States and even worse news those who share a genuine interest in increasing public safety.
Beyond his animal woes, Newsom has demonstrated a lack of personal and professional ethics. In 2007, Newsom admitted to having an affair with his campaign manager's wife. At the time of the affair, the wife worked in the mayor's office (see: SF Chronicle), making the entire affair even more of a professional blunder (it's not a best business practice to sleep with one's employees). To add insult to injury, Newsom was good friends with his campaign manager, Alex Tourk, and the two often socialized outside of work. That friendship did not stop Newsom from having sex with Tourk's wife. Someone who shows such a complete disregard for personal and professional ethics should NOT be Governor of California.
